FOKUS – An alternative for Luxembourg

The sensible alternative
Change requires more than just slogans
Many parties like to describe themselves as ‘the alternative’. We take this very seriously, because the problems being addressed are very real and fundamental changes are very much needed – unfortunately, all too often because there is too much debate and too little decision-making in politics. But mere criticism or playing the ‘strongman’ game does not solve problems. Real change can only be achieved with clear objectives, concrete plans and long-term strategies that will still bear fruit in five or ten years’ time.
We stand for a viable alternative in the political centre: bold enough to take decisions – sensible enough to justify them soundly and implement them correctly.
Politics is not an end in itself, but a service to the common good. We are committed to stability, responsibility and a clear vision for Luxembourg’s future.
For responsible politics and reforms
We prioritise stability over short-term populism. By establishing clear rules for political accountability and reforming state structures, we enable sustainable action.
That is why we are calling for a Commission for the Future, designed to make politics more accountable and to strengthen citizens’ right to have a say.
In addition, we believe this issue includes term limits, the separation of national and local mandates, and a ban on changing political parties whilst in office. We call for the direct election of the Prime Minister and efficient local government reforms, including an effective ‘Chamber of Mayors’. Furthermore, the National Council for Foreigners should be given greater political clout.
For a committed society
Engagement is the foundation of our social cohesion. Those who take on responsibility deserve recognition and social security.
We want to promote voluntary work and introduce flexible working models – such as voluntary reductions in working hours without loss of pay for families and volunteers. A civic service scheme should promote social cohesion, and we also want to recognise the contribution made to society by older people.
For the rule of law and accountability
Trust requires reliability. We stand for a strong rule of law that responds consistently and swiftly to breaches. Civic engagement is expressly recognised as a valuable contribution.
For population growth and the family
A strong family policy is the foundation of social cohesion. We are resolutely combating child poverty and creating the financial scope for people to start a family. We are committed to providing a choice of childcare options and tax relief for parents. We support organisations that carry out good youth work.
For sustainable growth
Growth must serve to preserve prosperity and infrastructure. We want controlled growth to safeguard pensions and education, whilst ensuring fair taxation of labour and capital. Innovative businesses will be supported and the greater region strengthened through cross-border cooperation.
For sustainable political decision-making
Politics must think and act beyond the duration of a single parliamentary term. We call for a ‘Commission for the Future’ in Parliament, modelled on the Finnish example. The government must regularly present reports on the future and gear reforms towards the long term. In collaboration with experts and citizens’ forums, politicians must commit to long-term goals and work towards them.
For a solid education and values put into practice
Education combines knowledge and values. That is why we want to involve parents more closely in the teaching of values and make schools once again a place of guidance and achievement. Luxembourgish is our bridge language in a system that facilitates multilingualism and integration.
For a transparent and sustainable pension and social security system
We will safeguard our country’s independence. Our aim is a stable pension system and the strengthening of domestic social benefits. We will reduce our dependence on immigration and on our borders in order to secure our systems in the long term.
