For Fokus, little has changed in terms of content in the last parliamentary year. Above all, the two governing parties are playing the familiar children’s game when it comes to important issues: Where the public is looking closely and has high expectations, they don’t budge.
For Fokus, new ways must continue to be found to secure public finances and pensions in the long term and maintain a high level of investment where it is needed, particularly in the areas of social, environmental and climate policy. The Prime Minister’s formula of financing everything through growth will not work and will leave many people in the lurch who are not already benefiting from growth, are leaving the country or are just getting by here. The country needs new approaches in the areas of fair taxation and fair investment as well as in the question of how Luxembourg society can develop and hold together in the future. Luxembourg needs a policy that keeps people in the country and offers them prospects for the future, whether young or old. Fokus has developed and communicated bold and sustainable solutions in all policy areas. We will continue to communicate and develop these.
In particular, there is one core demand that we have been campaigning for since our foundation: the introduction of community service. Like many people in the country, we at Fokus fear that society is becoming increasingly divided. Civic values and respect for them, social cohesion and prospects for young people through a targeted and realistic education can be complemented and strengthened by a civil service. A country like Luxembourg needs citizens who identify with our values, who are willing and able to get involved, help people in need and be a fully-fledged part of a society that is more than just a cog in a model of perpetual economic growth.
We are calling for new impetus and more courage from the parliamentary parties in the discussion on social cohesion. The results of the last election show that the Western social and economic model needs new impetus. During the last election, many parties adopted our proposals or commented on them positively.
After the elections, as is so often the case, many statements are forgotten. Focus remains undeterred and is stepping up its efforts at national level to offer real and bold solutions together with the parliamentary parties and to do justice to the many voices of support we received in October.
